Biography

A literary life across poetry, publishing, translation, and film

Angus He, also known as He Sanpo, was born in 1964 in Guizhou, China. His parents were both teachers and were persecuted to death during the Cultural Revolution. He graduated from the Creative Writing Program for Writers at the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Art in Beijing.

He is a poet, screenwriter, director, translator, and founder of Raintree Literary Agency. His poetry has received the Ding Ling Literature Award, the Xu Zhimo Poetry Gold Award, China’s First Independent Poetry Award, and the Toyota China Youth Environmental Protection Award.

He has authored poetry collections including Cyanopica cyanus and Essays in Idleness. His translations include Midnight Sailing Boat and Anecdotes About Spirits and Immortals. His work spans literary writing, screen storytelling, publishing strategy, author branding, and the transformation of books into rights-ready literary properties.

2004

The film rights to his screenplay The Twelve Houses of Love were sold for RMB 2 million.

2015

Became a partner in the Chinese Writers Rich List project through Shanghai Daxing Culture Co., Ltd.

2016

His portrait was selected for a Chinese postage stamp.

2017

Translated and published Midnight Sailing Boat, which became a bestseller with three million copies sold.

2019

Founded Shanghai Waterfall Culture Co., Ltd. In the same year, he wrote and directed Li Sao and Lamb.

2020

Moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where he began writing the novel Chinese Swan.

2023

Translated and published Anecdotes About Spirits and Immortals.

2024

Published the novel God in San Francisco, completed the translation of Selected Classical Writings of Su Dongpo, and published the poetry collection Riding a Snail to Travel.

2025

Completed the screenplays Asian Insomnia, Hell Rescue, and My Friend’s Crazy Wedding.
